Hello and Welcome
Some of us have arrived in the past few years, while others have been here for decades.
Many moved in to be within walking distance of work at (then) Energy, Mines & Resources Canada or the Civic Hospital; others appreciated the “look and feel” and proximity to downtown.
Over time there have been proposals or events that have threatened our peace and tranquility; sometimes there is a request from the City for input to its plans.
Happily, there have been neighbours who have volunteered to play a role in preparing a coordinated response, or advocating to promote best practices.
Examples include:
- liaising with the National Capital Commission each year, to ensure that the Canadian Tulip Festival enables everyone to enjoy the tulips, while residents can still have easy access to our homes.
- In recent years, volunteers have been working to provide input on the continuing development of the new Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital,
- and with the City on the redevelopment of Bronson Avenue, so that it can serve for transportation, but be safe for everyone who needs to cross it.
We are members of both the Glebe Community Association (GCA) and the Dow’s Lake Residents’ Association (DLRA), each of which takes the lead on issues of concern.
The DLRA has a smaller area and focuses on things specific to us. Its Executive team plays a coordinating role for volunteers working on different initiatives and, importantly, ensures that residents are provided with information on what the initiatives are, and how and when individual residents can participate.
We have recently enjoyed celebrating together the renewal of the basketball court in Senator Eugene Forsey Park, but must remember there was effort behind the scenes to provide input to the renewal, liaise with our Councillor’s office, and organize the celebration.
If we each play a part, we can make sure the DLRA remains relevant and focused on neighbourhood priorities that will ensure we can maintain the quality of life we enjoy in the Dow’s Lake area, while managing the changes that we know will continue.
Will you please volunteer to be part of the team
